Rating Methodology.

Transparency and editorial integrity are the bedrock of BookPyramid. This document details how we select books, how our ratings are calculated, how we protect readers from unwanted spoilers, and our monetization disclosures.

1. Editorial Independence

BookPyramid operates under strict editorial independence. We do not accept payment, free promotional merchandise, or reciprocal arrangements in exchange for positive reviews or favorable coverage. While our critics may occasionally receive Advance Reader Copies (ARCs) from publishers for pre-release analysis, receiving an ARC never guarantees a positive review or any review at all.

2. The 5-Star Rating System

Our 5-star scoring reflects literary merit, emotional resonance, pacing, and execution relative to its genre:

Masterpiece / Essential Reading: Flawless execution of theme, voice, and narrative tension. A book that redefines its genre.

★★★★☆ (4.0)

Highly Recommended: Exceptional character dynamics, sharp writing, and deeply memorable story with only minor flaws.

★★★☆☆ (3.0)

Solid / Enjoyable: Entertaining and well-crafted, though perhaps relying on familiar tropes or suffering from pacing inconsistencies.

★★☆☆☆ (2.0)

Underwhelming: Promising premise let down by inconsistent character motivation, repetitive prose, or unresolved plot threads.

★☆☆☆☆ (1.0)

Not Recommended: Severe narrative failure, offensive framing, or fundamental lack of narrative coherence.

3. The BookPyramid Romance Spice Scale (🌶)

To help romance readers find the exact level of heat they are comfortable with, we assign an objective spice classification:

1/5 — Sweet / Closed Door: Romance is central, but physical intimacy fades to black before explicit scenes occur.
2/5 — Warm / Sensual: Mild intimacy with kissing and physical affection, without anatomically explicit descriptions.
3/5 — Steamy / Open Door: Moderately explicit love scenes focused on emotional connection and physical intimacy (1–2 scenes).
4/5 — High Heat / Explicit: Multiple detailed, explicit intimate scenes with high narrative tension and passionate dialogue.
5/5 — Scorching / Taboo / Kink: Pervasive, highly detailed explicit scenes featuring darker romance tropes, primal play, or intense physical exploration.

4. Spoiler Policy & Ending Breakdowns

Standard reviews on BookPyramid are strictly spoiler-free, evaluating plot setup and characters without giving away crucial twists. When an article is designated as an "Ending Explained" or "Plot Breakdown", we clearly mark it in the title and headline so readers can explore deep spoilers safely.
